The world wide web is a big place full of facts, fiction, ideas and more, all waiting to be discovered by either the courageous, curious or those with nothing better to do. While it might all look rather big and flashy, there are really only three different kinds of websites out there.

That sure doesn’t seem possible but with a little reading and some consideration, you too will see the similarities between websites which looked individual and unique beforehand. Essentially, all the websites in the world are about advertising, e-commerce or entertainment. This might seem too short and impossibly simple, but read on; you’ll see.

Advertising

There is an awful lot of money to be made in selling things for other people. Many websites exist solely on the money yielded from advertising, which is why link farms and similar sites are still popular today. That doesn’t mean the people who land on them are happy to see the wall of links though.

These websites obviously exists solely to procure currency and they don’t tend to give much back to the worldwide community. Youtube, popular as it is, is still a website focused on advertising and getting people to click those ads. These days, that’s not even necessary anymore; Youtube pretty much forces its ads down users’ throats now. The thing is, millions of people are still happy to deal with it everyday so they can watch their favorite videos.

E-commerce

When you hear e-commerce or electronic commerce, what comes to mind? eBay is an industry superstar as far as electronic commerce goes. It’s the biggest market on the market for everything and anything a person could want to buy. That doesn’t mean eBay is the only website offering services like this, however.

Anyone trying to sell something can set up a website and make some extra money from people who do their shopping online. Keeping a small, personal site up and running could cost only a few dollars a month in comparison to the millions eBay and similar sites spend every year to keep things up and running. People will always be trying to make money so sites devoted to e-commerce will always be around. Well, unless we go back to trading chickens or something like that.

Entertainment

Sometimes it really is just about having a good time. All the blogs devoted to cats, all the online radios like Pandora and every other place offering free entertainment knows there’s still money to be made, even without selling a thing. Just like people will always be looking to get ahead or make a buck, they’re pretty much always looking for ways to get away from the monotony of everyday life, too.

This is why websites focusing on entertainment are so popular and why these are one of the three different kinds of websites which make up the internet. Entertainment covers a lot of things too; if it’s a place offering music, video games or reviews related to either, they are all still focused on helping the visitor get a little more joy out of life.
